Send campaign emails
Zidi can email each campaign recipient their personal link. The emails go out through your own mail account, from your own address.
Available on: Free, Starter and Pro. The number of emails you can send depends on your plan.
How it works
Zidi sends campaign emails through SMTP. SMTP is the standard way an app sends mail through your email provider, such as Gmail or Outlook. You enter your provider's SMTP details once. Zidi then sends from your address, and replies come to your inbox.
Before you start
- A launched campaign. The email buttons appear only after launch.
- The SMTP details for your mail account. Gmail and Yahoo need an app password, not your normal password.
- A business postal address. Zidi asks for it because the CAN-SPAM law requires a real mailing address in campaign email.
Campaigns that Copper sends have no email buttons. Copper sends those emails. See Campaigns sent from Copper.
Set up email sending
- In the sidebar, click Campaigns and open a launched campaign.
- Click Set Up Email Sending. The Email Sending (SMTP) form opens.
- Pick your Email Provider. Zidi fills in the host and port for you.
- Enter your Username and Password.
- Enter a From Email, and optionally a From Name. Recipients see these as the sender.
- Enter your Business Postal Address. It appears at the bottom of every campaign email.
- Click Save.
- Click Test Connection. Zidi sends a test email, "Zidi SMTP Test - Connection Verified", to the address you use to sign in to Zidi.
When the test works, you see "Connection verified! Check your inbox for the test email." The status changes to Verified, and the campaign button changes to Send Emails.
The same form also opens from Set Up SMTP in the Share dialog's Share with tracking tab. One setup covers both. See Tracked links.
Provider settings
| Provider | Host and port | Password to use |
|---|---|---|
| Gmail | smtp.gmail.com, 465 | A Google app password. Turn on 2-Step Verification first. |
| Outlook | smtp.office365.com, 587 | Your Outlook or Microsoft 365 password |
| Yahoo | smtp.mail.yahoo.com, 465 | A Yahoo app password |
| SendGrid | smtp.sendgrid.net, 465 | Your SendGrid API key. The username is the word apikey. |
| Custom | Your server's host and port | Your SMTP password. Turn on Use SSL/TLS (port 465) if your server uses port 465. |
Write and send the emails
- On the launched campaign, click Send Emails. The Send Campaign Emails window opens.
- On the Compose tab, pick a saved email with Load Template, or write a new one.
- Enter a Subject (up to 500 characters) and a Body (up to 50,000 characters). Use tokens such as
{firstName}to personalise them. - Open the Preview tab to check the email with the first recipient's details.
- If Zidi asks for your business postal address, enter it. This is a one-time step.
- Click Send N Emails.
The token menu offers firstName, lastName, fullName, email and company. For your own CSV columns, type the token by hand, such as {Region}. See tokens.
What recipients receive
- An email from your From Name and From Email, with your subject and body.
- The video thumbnail and a Watch Video button, added for you. The button opens the recipient's personal link.
- A footer: "Sent via Zidi. Don't want these? Unsubscribe." and your postal address.
Sending limits
| Limit | Free | Starter | Pro |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emails per send | 5 | 50 | 200 |
| Emails in any 30 days, across all campaigns | 50 | 1,000 | 5,000 |
| Saved email templates | 1 | 5 | Unlimited |
If a campaign has more recipients than one send allows, the window shows "Capped at <limit> on <plan> plan". Send again to reach the next group.
The number on the Send N Emails button can be higher than what is sent. People emailed in the last 7 days, unsubscribed people and your 30-day limit are applied when you send.
Each send skips:
- recipients who unsubscribed
- recipients this campaign emailed in the last 7 days
So each click of Send Emails works through the people not yet emailed. After 7 days, a new send can email the same people again. Only emails that were sent count toward the 30-day limit.
Save email templates
In the Send Campaign Emails window, open the Templates tab. Create a template with a name, subject and body. You can edit, duplicate or delete templates. To choose a default, open a template's options menu and choose Set as Default. The default template fills in the Compose tab when you open it. Templates work across all your campaigns.
Delivery and opens
Zidi sends the emails in the background, 50 at a time. The Email Sends card on the campaign shows how many were sent, opened and failed. You cannot start another send until the current one finishes.
Zidi records the first time each email is opened. The card shows the number of opened emails, not an open rate.
Unsubscribes
Every email has an unsubscribe link in the footer. The emails also carry the standard one-click unsubscribe header that some mail apps use. On the unsubscribe page, the recipient confirms with Unsubscribe me.
An unsubscribe applies to all your future campaigns, not only the current one. Zidi skips that address in every later send.
Change or remove your mail settings
- On a launched campaign, click the settings icon next to Send Emails ("Edit email settings").
- Enter your password (or app password) again. Zidi does not show the saved one, and Save needs it.
- After you save a change, the status goes back to Unverified. Click Test Connection again before you send.
- To disconnect your mail account, click the delete icon next to Test Connection (Remove SMTP configuration).
Troubleshooting
| Message | What it means and what to do |
|---|---|
| "SMTP not configured. Go to Settings to set up email sending." | No mail account is set up. Use Set Up Email Sending on a launched campaign. The Settings page does not have this form. |
| "SMTP not verified. Test your connection in Settings first." | Open the settings icon next to Send Emails and click Test Connection. |
| "SMTP connection failed. Check your credentials and server settings." | Check the host, port, username and password. For Gmail and Yahoo, use an app password. |
| "Please fill in all required fields" | Fill in SMTP Host, Username, Password and From Email. When you edit saved settings, type the password again. |
| "Add your business postal address before sending. CAN-SPAM requires a physical mailing address in every campaign email." | Enter your postal address in the send window or in your mail settings. |
| "Monthly email limit reached" | You sent your plan's limit in the last 30 days. Wait, or upgrade. |
| "No recipients to send to (all unsubscribed or filtered out)" | Everyone has unsubscribed or was emailed by this campaign in the last 7 days. |
| "An email send is already in progress for this campaign" | Wait for the current send to finish. |
| "Campaign must be ACTIVE to send emails" | Launch the campaign first. |
| "Template limit reached" | Delete a template or upgrade. See Plans. |
